Farmer's Walk with Overhead Hold
farmer-s-walk-with-overhead-hold
सावधानी बरतें
- avoid · Shoulder impingement — The overhead hold requires full shoulder flexion and stability. If this is painful or impossible, switch to a standard farmer's carry or a waiter's walk with a lighter load.
A unilateral carry where one arm holds a weight overhead while the other carries at the side. The overhead arm demands shoulder stability and core control while walking, creating a unique anti-lateral-flexion challenge.
यदि आप इसमें नए हैं
Start with a light weight overhead — something you can press and hold comfortably for 20 seconds while standing still. The walking adds a balance and stability demand that standing does not. If you cannot hold the weight overhead with a locked elbow and packed shoulder while standing, do not add the walking component yet.
आगे बढ़ें
Slow your walking pace deliberately to increase time under tension for the stabilisers around the shoulder and trunk. A three-second stride forces your core to manage the anti-lateral-flexion demand far longer than a brisk walk. Work in sets of 20–30 metres or 30–45 seconds per side, extending distance before you reach for heavier dumbbells. When you can complete three controlled walks at 45 seconds without your shoulders drifting from level, move up one increment. For a harder bodyweight-style challenge without adding load, try closing your eyes for two steps mid-walk to strip away visual feedback, or walk on a slight incline. Once the single-dumbbell version feels routine, progress to holding a dumbbell overhead in both hands simultaneously while walking, which removes the counterbalance entirely. Alternatively, swap the overhead dumbbell for a kettlebell bottoms-up press hold during the carry to demand even greater grip and wrist stability.
सामान्य गलतियां
Letting the overhead arm drift forward or backward — the weight should stay directly over the shoulder. Leaning away from the overhead side to compensate for the load. Shrugging the working shoulder up toward the ear instead of packing it down and back. Walking too fast before establishing control.

- 1
Press a dumbbell or kettlebell overhead with one arm. Lock out the elbow and pack the shoulder down and back. Your bicep should be near your ear.
- 2
Pick up a second weight in the opposite hand and hold it at your side, as you would for a standard farmer's carry.
- 3
Brace your core and stand tall. Your shoulders should be level — do not lean away from the overhead weight.
- 4
Walk forward with controlled, steady steps. Keep the overhead arm locked out and directly over the shoulder. Walk for the prescribed distance or time.
- 5
Return to the start, switch sides, and repeat.
